One of the most natural methods to re-create a self-sustaining population of migratory fish is to introduce fish eggs to river habitats where the fish would spawn also naturally. Now, this can be done efficiently with the Eco Egg Box, our design-protected biodegradable box made of CKB - Craft Board.
Introduction of salmonid eggs using egg boxes can be practiced in all kinds of running waters: the most important prerequisite is water of neutral pH, high oxygen saturation and low concentration of dissolved and particulate organic matter. When the environment is good enough for salmonid larvae and parr, stocking of fish using Eco-egg-box is the most efficient and natural way for re-introduction of lost salmonid populations. The larvae will hatch inside the box and the fry will face all natural selection forces as soon as they exit the box. The fingerlings will learn to use natural food and avoid predators and will eventually contribute to the stock increase by their own reproduction. Migratory fish will return to their original hatching location with incredible precision, if just let do so.
A major advantage of the Eco Egg Box is its biodegradability; the box will break down shortly after the eggs have hatched. Therefore, the box does not need to be recovered, saving lot of time and effort.
We recommend using eyed eggs that tolerate handling well. Consult a local hatchery for the best timing that normally occurs in March-April.
Eyed eggs will remain in prime condition for 1-2 days. Keep them cool, moist, and protected from UV-light and make sure they do not freeze. Favour local strains for stocking: many life skills of fish are genetically coded and different in every location.
The Eco Egg Box can be assembled either brown side out for low visibility or white side out to support exact positioning in deeper waters. The box will take 2 dl, approx. 1000 salmon or 2000 trout eggs.
Portion 1-2 dl of eggs and 2-3 small stones into each box. The stones will help the box to sink, and they will keep it in place in the stream.
Boxes should be placed in oxygen rich water close to the natural habitats of the parr, i.e., areas with small stones and mosses. One box for 50 m2 of habitat is sufficient. The boxes will protect the eggs against predation and direct UV-light. Avoid still water: for example, behind large boulders eggs can suffer from sedimentation and poor water exchange.
A couple days after hatching the larvae will swim out from the openings in the boxes. Hatching rates in well placed boxes typically exceed 95%.
Improvement of parr habitats and water quality as well removal of migration barriers will support your efforts.
