CarbonSpace full net ecosystem exchange (NEE) monitoring & Consultancy services

CarbonSpace is a satellite-powered platform for Carbon footprint tracking. We monitor carbon emissions and sequestrations from farms, fields, forests, and other land use. We provide primary data to NBS project managers, Procurement managers, Sustainability departments to allow them measure and communicate the success of their projects and generate claims
Full description
The exchange of carbon as a result of biological processes (soils, crops and trees, livestock) is especially hard to estimate. Existing tools have significant limitations: they are either costly or provide highly uncertain estimations.
This might mislead climate action and slow down the sector’s transition towards net-zero.

CarbonSpace has developed an entirely remote and cost-efficient solution that provides historical data and can be easily scaled to monitor larger regions or remote areas so corporates can invest smartly (insetting and offsetting) and measure the impact of their actions to accelerate the global transition to net-zero.

CarbonSpace is revolutionary because it assesses carbon directly on the ecosystem level without use of industry averages, self-reported data and assumed emission factors. CarbonSpace data is unique to local conditions and particular land management changes thanks to a unique ML technology using satellite data combined with data from a vast distributed network of ground stations measuring carbon fluxes continually.

Major impact for the analysis of the supply chain:
Integrate land’s carbon performance in the reporting
Verify the claims of suppliers
Identify carbon-related risks in the supply chain

Major advantages for monitoring sustainable agriculture programs:
Determine priority areas for intervention and their carbon potential
Assess the quality of the implementation of new practices
Develop fact-based incentives programs for farmers and suppliers

Major interest for nature-based carbon offsets:
Select the most reliable nature-based projects
Track their performance and secure the investment in these solutions.
Develop own registry and risk assessment tools for carbon offset projects

Our historical datasets since 2000 allow for setting reliable and well-grounded baselines. The scalability of the platform allows for monitoring the possible leakage effects, while its accuracy yields information about the additionality of the projects.
Unlike current carbon footprint monitoring solutions such as manual methods or on-site measurements, the CarbonSpace platform is a remote tool, which is easier scalable and much more cost-effective. Cost reduction is up to 90% compared to traditional monitoring methods.

Value proposition
1. Carbon Monitoring
- Full net ecosystem exchange (NEE) monitoring of Nature conservation areas, NBS projects, thousands of smallholder farmers
- Calculate current and 22 years of historical sequestration data for all assets (farms/forests): no on-site verification or sampling needed
- Historical and real-time monitoring to set up baselines and quantify impact against them (monthly data)
- Upload data into the CarbonSpace web interface and provide access

2. Analytics and consultancy services:
- Assessment of smallholder regenerative agriculture impact against a baseline.
- Filter farms/forests by client criteria, e.g. land cover disturbance assessment against a selected cut-off date (e.g. check against EU deforestation legislation or VERRA eligibility criteria )
- Identification of best and poorest performing areas and suppliers.
- Identification of champion farmers to establish scalable and fair incentive systems
- Apply procurement criteria for preferential sourcing or setting fair farmer incentive systems
- Identify the combined impact of interventions on annual sequestration levels across all relevant pools (above and below ground biomass, secondary land cover, soil)
- Establish the scientific baseline, required for impact reporting
- Build dynamic baselines (historical data + regional data/control plots). Compare the results with historical baselines.
- Evaluate biodiversity and natural capital impacts; provide recommendations for additional assessments
- Provide feasibility assessment for carbon credit generation, estimate the potential
- Detection of depleted areas for targeted interventions
- Detection of carbon stock change associated with land use change

3. Carbon Claims
- Shadow verification on implementation, and risk management (e.g. against sample-based audits)
- Reporting claims e.g. insetting, SBTi reductions, Paris Agreement contribution, narrative claims
- Data contribution to LCAs
- Third-party verification of reports and reporting claims.
